Maryam Shafipour

Dear Amnesty International Canadian Section (English Speaking) Members,

My name is Maryam Shafipour, and I am honored to submit my candidacy for a position on the Board of Directors. As a human rights activist, policy advocate, and former political prisoner from Iran, I have dedicated my life to advancing human rights, freedom of expression, and democratic governance in Canada and internationally.

With extensive experience working with NGOs, international organizations, and government bodies, I bring a strong commitment to Amnesty International’s mission and a deep understanding of the challenges facing human right defenders worldwide.

Experience & Expertise

  • Human Rights & Advocacy
    I have worked extensively on freedom of assembly and association and their impact on sustainable development and policymaking. My advocacy spans both grassroots movements and high-level policy discussions, equipping me with the skills to bridge activism with governance.
  • Policy & Governance
    With a background in political science from York University, I have engaged with Canadian and international policymakers, helping shape human rights initiatives. My experience in policy development, research, and coalition-building allows me to contribute effectively to Amnesty’s strategic goals.
  • International Experience & Leadership
    I have collaborated with various human rights organizations, media outlets, and government institutions, including participation in the Nobel Women’s Initiative program for young women leaders. This global perspective enables me to advocate for inclusive, intersectional, and justice-driven approaches in human rights work.
  • Commitment to Amnesty International’s Vision
    My lived experience as a former prisoner of conscience and my work in Iranian and Afghan human rights advocacy have reinforced my commitment to defending marginalized voices, protecting refugees, and ensuring accountability for human rights violations. I am eager to bring this passion to the governance and strategic direction of Amnesty Canada.
