Selah Getahun

Dear Amnesty International Canada Membership,

I am Selah Getahun, a dedicated nonprofit leader, researcher, and advocate for human rights, newcomer empowerment, and social justice. With over a decade of experience in nonprofit leadership, government relations, and academia, I have consistently worked to address systemic barriers affecting marginalized communities, particularly Black and immigrant populations. Currently, I serve as the Executive Director of the Ethiopian Association in the Greater Toronto Area and Surrounding Region (EAGTA SR), a Black-led and Black-serving organization that provides culturally responsive services to immigrants and refugees. Through this role, I have led initiatives that promote immigrant employability, mental wellness, and community development, all of which align with Amnesty International’s advocacy for social justice and human rights.

Experience & Alignment with Amnesty International Canada’s Mission
My background in international relations and political science (MA, Addis Ababa University) has given me a strong foundation in global human rights frameworks, international law, and policy analysis. Additionally, my direct engagement with Global Affairs Canada and the U.S. Department of State has provided me with invaluable experience in diplomatic relations, advocacy, and policy influence, skills that are crucial for advancing Amnesty International’s mission both nationally and internationally.

Throughout my career, I have championed the rights of newcomers, refugees, and historically marginalized groups, advocating for inclusive employment policies, anti-racism initiatives, and systemic change in Canadian institutions. My leadership in the nonprofit sector, including roles at organizations such as Skills for Change of Metro Toronto and the Afro Newcomers Organization, has equipped me with a deep understanding of governance, strategic planning, and resource mobilization—key aspects of effective board service.

Why I Am an Excellent Candidate
I am passionate about amplifying the voices of the underrepresented and ensuring that human rights are upheld in Canada and globally. My expertise in governance, advocacy, and program development will contribute to the Board’s mission of strengthening Amnesty International’s impact. Furthermore, my extensive network within the nonprofit and government sectors will be invaluable in fostering partnerships and advancing Amnesty’s advocacy work.

If elected, I will bring strategic leadership, a deep commitment to human rights, and a community-centered approach to the Board of Directors. I look forward to collaborating with like-minded individuals to further Amnesty International’s vision for a just and equitable world.
