Maleeha Haq

I am a Canadian student currently pursuing my MSc in Politics and International Relations at SOAS University of London, specializing in Middle Eastern politics. As someone deeply committed to social justice, decolonial advocacy, and the protection of human rights globally, I am honoured to apply for a position on the Board of Directors or as the 2025 Global Delegate.

I have been engaged with Amnesty International Canada since 2018, when I initiated the Amnesty International Council in my high school, alongside serving a youth amnesty community member. I further attended Amnesty’s Human Rights College in 2019, then as a planning team member for Amnesty’s Human Rights College in 2021, where I also moderated a Q and A. I further worked alongside Amnesty members to create educational resources surrounding Palestinian advocacy. I have further led numerous events and seminars centering on global human rights issues. These experiences have not only shaped my leadership and governance skills but have also affirmed my commitment to the values Amnesty upholds.

At the University of Toronto, I served as the Executive Research and Outreach Director for Amnesty International UofT, where I led campaigns, managed educational outreach, and developed social media content rooted in accessible, fact-based advocacy. I am also the founding President of The Palestine Forum at UofT, where I created educational spaces to explore human rights, cultural heritage, and liberation struggles through an intersectional lens.

My academic and activist work focuses on amplifying marginalized voices, particularly within the context of settler colonialism, racial justice, and youth-led movements. I believe strongly in Amnesty’s mission and see governance roles as an opportunity to not only strengthen its democratic structure but to ensure it remains inclusive, youth-empowered, and globally connected.

As a young Muslim woman and long-time Amnesty member, I bring both lived experience and years of hands-on leadership—within the organization and beyond. I am confident that my skills in research, outreach, governance, and intersectional advocacy would be a valuable asset to the Board or as a Global Delegate.

Thank you for considering my application and for the opportunity to continue serving Amnesty’s mission on a larger scale.
