“Dear AICSES membership,
My name is Nazia Shaikh. I am a lawyer based in Ottawa, Canada, born in Toronto, with a background in international relations and experience working with community members to advance human rights.
I am submitting this application for consideration for a position as a Director on the AICSES Board because I strongly believe in and champion the mission of AICSES. I am committed to ensuring its growth is not only sustained but developed to its full potential. While my legal background and education have provided me with a strong understanding of the law, civil procedure, case interpretation, and legal application, my personal journey—growing up in Toronto and living abroad—has further shaped my perspective and deepened my drive to ensure that my advocacy is rooted in care for the people I aim to serve.
What makes me an excellent candidate for this role is my diverse and hands-on experience both locally and internationally. I have worked with global organizations such as UNICEF, focusing on issues that directly impact vulnerable populations. My local community involvement includes volunteering at food banks and organizing film screenings to raise awareness and support for human rights causes. I have also facilitated panel discussions on current affairs and pressing issues affecting refugees worldwide—demonstrating a commitment to creating spaces for dialogue and action.
In addition, I have mentored youth through leadership development programs and served on boards for humanitarian relief efforts, including ShelterBox. These roles have enabled me to combine strategic thinking, compassion, and collaboration to make meaningful contributions to the communities I serve.
I am eager to bring my perspective, enthusiasm for collaboration and teamwork, and passion for connecting with like-minded individuals to Amnesty International Canada’s Board and membership. These individuals are powerful reflections of the communities they represent. I look forward to contributing meaningfully to the organization’s goals.”
