Ten candidates in the 2020 presidential race – including the president– responded to a questionnaire on human rights issues provided by Amnesty International USA. The candidates submitted responses on a range of domestic and international human rights issues including refugees and asylum-seekers, gun violence, lethal force by police, arms sales, LGBTI equality, women’s rights, free expression, and national security.
“As the national televised debates kick off, now is the time for all presidential candidates to make known their positions on the most pressing human rights issues of our day,” said Joanne Lin, National Director for Advocacy and Government Affairs. “Human rights are guaranteed for all people, and all candidates should explain how they will protect and uphold human rights in the U.S. and around the globe. From gun violence at home to U.S. arms being used to commit war crimes abroad; and from people fleeing persecution to seek safety at our border to attacks on press freedom worldwide – every presidential candidate must explain how they will address these human rights issues.”
The questionnaire was sent to all candidates. Respondents include Cory Booker, Pete Buttigieg, John Delaney, Kirsten Gillibrand, Jay Inslee, Bernie Sanders, Eric Swalwell, Donald Trump, Elizabeth Warren, and Andrew Yang. Additional responses from other candidates will be published on the Amnesty International USA website as they are received.
