Argentina: Lgbti+ Activist Pierina Nochetti Acquitted

Pierina Nochetti, a lesbian activist and mother of three, has been acquitted of all charges after reaching an agreement with the Municipality of Necochea on October 31. She had faced accusations for allegedly painting a graffiti asking, “Where is Tehuel?” The criminal file against her is now closed, and her work and salary situation will be restored.

I am super grateful to have the support of a lot of people who think this is absurd,” Pierina said after the hearing. “I am a worker, and they have violated my rights, even bringing me to an oral and public trial. We will continue to ask for Tehuel and accompany Norma (Tehuel’s mother). Our struggles are united, and I don’t want what happened to me to happen to anyone else.”

Charges over graffiti linked to justice for Tehuel

Pierina, an LGBTI+ activist and organizer of Necochea’s Pride Parade, was accused of painting a graffiti in a local amphitheater in 2022. The graffiti referred to the disappearance of Tehuel de la Torre, a young transgender man who vanished in March 2021 on his way to a job interview.

Tehuel’s family, along with LGBTI+ and transfeminist movements, has led a relentless campaign demanding justice for him. Pierina’s peaceful activism made her a target of criminal prosecution, which disrupted her personal and professional life for over a year.

Workplace discrimination

Pierina also publicly denounced workplace discrimination due to her sexual orientation and gender expression. These experiences highlighted the intersecting challenges she faced as both a visible lesbian and a human rights defender. Despite her vital role as a provider for her family, Pierina was subjected to administrative sanctions at work, further compounding the injustices against her.

International solidarity

Pierina’s acquittal was achieved through widespread global support. Amnesty International’s urgent action mobilized thousands of letters and emails to the prosecutor, and over 45,000 signatures were collected. This pressure helped secure the agreement that cleared Pierina of all charges.

Pierina’s case is a victory for human rights and a reminder of the power of solidarity. It highlights ongoing struggles for justice and equality, including the fight to ensure justice for Tehuel.

NO FURTHER ACTION IS REQUESTED. MANY THANKS TO ALL WHO SENT APPEALS.
