The deadline for nominations for the 2024-25 Amnesty International Canada Media Awards has been extended.
Journalists and media organizations now have until Sunday, August 17, 2025 at 11:59 p.m. ET to submit their best human rights-focused reporting for consideration.
Now in their 30th year, the Amnesty International Canada Media Awards honour excellence in human rights storytelling by Canada-based journalists and Canadian journalists reporting abroad. Entries are evaluated by a distinguished jury based on journalistic excellence, depth of storytelling, amplification of voices at the heart of an issue, and the framing of solutions.
Amnesty International Canada Media Awards categories
Amnesty International Canada invites submissions for the following categories:
- National Written News: News article or feature story (~4,000 words or less) about current or breaking human rights issues.
- Long-form Video: Documentary or current affairs segment (10–100 minutes) focusing on human rights themes.story combining at least three formats (text, photo, video, audio, animation, or data visuals), ~4,000 words or less.
- Short-form Video: News piece (maximum 10 minutes) that highlight human rights issues.
- Long-form Radio: Current affairs or documentary-style audio (up to ~100 minutes) on a human rights theme.
- Long-form Podcast: Podcast episode (up to ~100 minutes) focused on human rights reporting.
- Local/Alternative Media: Written report (~4,000 words or less) in local or alternative outlets covering human rights issues—typically non‑mainstream media.
- Post-secondary Youth: Work in text, audio, video, or mixed media formats by Canadian postsecondary students, published or broadcast via a media outlet connected to their institution.
To be eligible for consideration, entries must have been published or broadcast in Canada between January 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024.
Entrants may submit a total of up to three works for consideration and can contribute in more than one category. One may submit their own work or nominate someone else’s, provided they have the journalist’s permission.
